I’ve agreed to paint a rhinoceros from Dinokeng Reserve and donate the painting to the reserve. The piece with be auctioned off, and the proceeds will go toward dehorning the park’s rhinos.
The park’s rhino’s horns have already been treated, and are not fit for human consumption, but the market for rhino horn has shifted, and now rhino horns have become a status symbol among various foreign cultures, and the reserve has made the decision to remove the horns in an attempt to save their animals, but have struggled to appropriate funding.
Dinokeng is the only game reserve in the province of Gauteng that contains all the “Big Five” of which, the rhinoceros is one. It would be a pity to see them reduced to only four of five.
